SELF-COMPASSION COACHING:
feel it… learn it… in just 1 appointment
Self-compassion: Maybe you’ve heard about this concept in the past few years, as it’s definitely having a moment. And for good reason. I believe it is hands down the most beautiful, gentle, fierce, powerful, and impactful skill any of us can learn in order to be happy.
Life is about relationships. And the most important relationship you’ll ever have is the one with yourself. And spoiler alert:
Whether you like it or not, you’re stuck with yourself for the rest of your life. Yep. And forever can be a long time.
So if you’re gonna be stuck with someone 24/7, you need them to be an awesome best friend. And chances are, you’ve probably been a shitty best friend to yourself on occasion. Or maybe on lots of occasions, but who’s counting?
Turns out, you can't hate yourself into happiness though.
If you’re like most people…
you’ve been subjected to a lot of criticism from a voice inside your head who likes to judge every little thing you think, feel, and do. A voice who tells you that you’re not enough. A voice who pressures you to always be perfect, and who shames you when you fall short.
This is known as your Inner Critic. And it has the best of intentions because it thinks it’s holding you accountable for your mistakes and motivating you to do better — to become the best version of yourself possible! The problem though is that your Inner Critic has the worst. delivery. ever.
What you really need is…
a friend who can comfort you… laugh with you… motivate you… inspire you… challenge you… love you… be there for you no matter what you’re going through. A friend who truly sees your worth and is hell bent on helping you see it too.
That is what self-compassion is all about: you providing the unconditional love to yourself that you deserve so that your worth and happiness is no longer contingent on being perfect. And don’t get it twisted, self-compassion isn’t about coddling yourself. It’s about self-improvement through love, not hate.
Let me teach you how to quiet your inner critic so that compassion, love, and acceptance are your new normal.
how the session will go
It’ll be a mix of me listening and learning about you, but also teaching and guiding you through exercises that will build up your self-compassion skills.
When you arrive, we’ll get to know each other a little through relaxed conversation. Then we’ll discuss the information I gathered from you in the intake paperwork (which you are sent beforehand). I’ll spend time learning about your Inner Critic, the parts of yourself that you most struggle with, and what your goals are. Then I’ll talk about the definition, purpose, and science behind self-compassion. From there, I’ll guide you through some experiential exercises to access both your Inner Critic and your Compassionate Self. There will be a mix of things we do that are tailored to your unique needs, which include: talking through things, guided visualizations, worksheets, developing new self-talk, practicing self-forgiveness, and beyond.
The session has some flexibility to it and will always be collaborative, however the basic structure is:
1) We connect, 2) I learn about you, 3) I teach you the basics, 4) I utilize various tools and exercises so that you can experience and practice self-compassion during the appointment, and 5) I give you handouts and additional resources to leave with that will summarize the work we did and help you implement these skills in your daily life.
My approach
In my work as a therapist, I’ve seen firsthand how strongly correlated self-compassion (or a lack thereof) is with a person’s happiness. To address the need for more self-compassion, I designed this service by blending Kristin Neff’s research with Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT). CFT is an approach that helps people strengthen their brain’s compassion muscle so that it can soothe instead of exacerbate difficult feelings. I believe self-compassion is a skill everyone can learn, but that it’s tough to learn on your own. My goal is to provide you with an understanding of what self-compassion is, why it’s useful, provide an experience where you get to actually feel self-compassion, and teach you how to incorporate it in your daily life.
